| Job Requirements | The McClatchy Washington Bureau is seeking a Digital News Developer to create interactive storytelling experiences as part of a digital strategy that will advance the Company's national and international journalism. Candidates should describe their success conceptualizing and building data visualizations and interactive graphics. If you are a visual storyteller, someone who sees the narrative in numbers, and thinks in code, this is your opportunity to make a mark. Expect your journalism skills to be as important as your programming skills and visual sensibility. This editorial position will ask you to tell stories differently and to inspire others to do the same.
The work will require advanced experience with HTML5, CSS, JavaScript (jQuery); an understanding of responsive design and proficiency with interaction design and user interfaces; familiarity with mining and manipulating data and Web scraping; comfort with graphics and layout. Responsibilities include producing daily and project-based journalism that will appear on all of McClatchy's digital platforms, starting with the McClatchyDC website and apps, then flowing to the Company's 29 local news websites and their apps.
This position is part of a digital team that works with: the bureau's 40 regional, national and foreign correspondents; the shared news initiatives group; the centralized video team; and journalists across the company. Responsibilities and Requirements:
> Work with McClatchy editors, reporters, designers and developers to craft the best means of telling news stories digitally. > Create storyboards, wireframes, page layouts, prototypes, landing pages, microsites, and other digital assets and deliverables needed during project development. > Publish interactive graphics, data visualizations, multimedia and other digital content with an excellence that matches the reporting it supports.
Education: College degree required.
Experience and Special Training: Minimum of 2 years programming experience required and 2 years of journalism experience preferred. The work will require advanced experience with HTML5, CSS, JavaScript, including jQery; an understanding of responsive design and elegant front-end design; proficiency with interaction design and user interfaces; data mining and Web scraping skills, including Python, Ruby, GIS; a deft hand with Adobe Illustrator.
Skills Needed: Excellent news judgment. Ability to get ridiculously excited about data. Commitment to telling each story in the way it needs to be told. Beautifully realized visualizations of scope and depth. A grounding in artistic storytelling and an innovative vision for how journalism should get done in 2015 and beyond.
Personal Attributes: Creative and collaborative mindset. Energy, passion, curiosity, and aesthetic know-how. Excellent interpersonal, communication, problem solving, and organizational skills required. Ability to work well with a variety of staff and editors throughout the Company.
